Wiki Article
Godzilla vs. Kong, commonly known as "Apex" is a 2021 American science fiction monster film directed by Legendary Pictures. It is the fourth installment in the MonsterVerse, after 2019's Godzilla: King of the Monsters. It serves as a sequel to both King of the Monsters and Kong: Skull Island.
Once scheduled for release on May 29, 2020, the film was then moved back to March 13, 2020, before being pushed back again to November 20th and finally May 21st, 2021. It was subsequently postponed until March 26th, 2021, before being released on March 31st, 2021, in American cinemas. The film was also available on HBO Max until April 30, 2021, simultaneously.
The film is directed by Adam Wingard and produced by Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Eric McLeod, and Brian Rogers, with script by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein based on a story by Terry Rossio, Michael Dougherty, and Zach Shields. King of the Monsters was also written by Borenstein, Dougherty, and Shields. Godzilla vs. Kong picks up five years after King of the Monsters, with Godzilla and Kong engaged in a gigantic fight in the aftermath of Ghidorah's rampage.
A dramatic confrontation between fabled rivals Godzilla and Kong is the focus of "Godzilla vs. Kong" Along on the adventure is Jia, an orphaned child with whom Kong has built an unbreakable bond. But they find themselves in the path of an infuriated Godzilla, wreaking havoc throughout the globe. It is simply the beginning of the enigma that lurks deep below the Earth's core.
When Jia comes to see Kong and offers him a toy, the Titan, knowing that he is stuck within the biodome, discovers this and quickly tosses a tree at it.
Godzilla emerges and attacks suddenly when he finishes downloading the info. The facility's ruins feature a strange piece of machinery that resembles a massive robotic eye.
Meanwhile, Apex's founder and CEO Walter Simmons engages Nathan Lind, a former Monarch scientist turned Hollow Earth theorist, to assist them in their quest for a tremendous energy source in the Hollow Earth, a subterranean planet under the Earth and the secret home of the Titans. Nathan is first cautious since his brother attempted to investigate the Hollow Earth and was killed by a powerful anti-gravity field within the tube. He ultimately accepts when Walter unveils Apex's development of Hollow Earth Aerial Vehicles, customized ship capable of withstanding the gravity field's pressure.
Nathan, Ilene, Jia, and an Apex crew lead by Walter's daughter Maia board a customized barge with Kong locked up to prevent him from escaping. Kong gets restless and anxious one rainy night, but Jia soothes him down by enabling her and Kong to clasp fingers in solidarity while Kong signs the word "home" much to Ilene's surprise. The following day, Ilene tells Nathan about how she raised Jia as her adopted daughter when violent and unpredictable storms killed most of the Iwi and their parents, but Jia was the sole survivor since Kong was the one who protected her, which led to the two creating a relationship.
Nathan sees no other alternative and determines that the gang should turn down all of the ships' engines to fool Godzilla into believing he destroyed them and Kong was vanquished, which they do. Godzilla looks at the shattered fleet with interest and then swims away, knowing he has triumphed. After realizing that reactivating the ships could allow Godzilla to return, the group decides to fly Kong to a Hollow Earth entry point in Antarctica, where Ghidorah was first frozen. Jia tells Kong that his house is via the front door, but he refuses to leave.
Meanwhile, Madison and Josh find Bernie, who recognizes Madison as Mark's daughter and joins their investigation as they believe Apex had something to do with Godzilla's change in behavior. Together, they sneak into the wrecked Apex base, only to find that the "eye" Bernie had described earlier is now gone. As they discover a secret facility deep underground, the group are inadvertently locked and transported in an antigravity transport vehicle carrying Skullcrawler eggs through an underground tunnel to Hong Kong.
The Hollow Earth has an ecosystem that is comparable to Skull Island. Two Warbats attack them, with one of them destroying one of the HEAVs while investigating the area. Kong rescues the group by killing the first Warbat and flinging its corpse onto the second, staggering it for a while before it recovers and constricts itself around him, knocking him out. Nathan's team's HEAV assaulted the Warbat before smothering Kong, enabling Kong to escape and pound the monster to death before eating on its guts.
Both Kong and Godzilla recuperate and rise to their feet, with Godzilla on the hunt for Kong, who hides from the Titan by perching himself atop a tower. Kong throws a construction crane into a building, distracting Godzilla to the point where he ambushes him from above and places the Titan in a chokehold with the intent of strangling him, only for Godzilla to break free and unleash his full fury on Kong, eventually dislocating his left arm, slashing Kong with his claws, and even stomping on his chest twice, despite Kong trying to force Godzilla off of him by punching his wounded thigh. With Kong restrained and held down, Godzilla roars fiercely at his opponent in a display of power, while Kong, beaten, roars passionately in defiance against Godzilla.
After seeing Kong's strength and fortitude, Godzilla shows pity and saves his life before going away, leaving Kong alive but severely hurt, and he finally loses consciousness as a result of commotio cordis, which means "compassionate heart."
Walter instructs Ren to send out Mechagodzilla to kill Godzilla. The mecha is activated despite Ren's warnings not to use the new Hollow Earth energy source without testing. Security apprehends Bernie, Madison, and Josh for breaking into Apex HQ and takes them to Walter. While Walter denies inciting Godzilla's war and triggering the whole mess, Madison accuses him of accepting responsibility for providing humanity a chance to fight back against Godzilla and the Titans.
Unknown to Walter as his back is turned while he monologues about his creation, Mechagodzilla suddenly goes haywire under the influence of both the energy source and Ghidorah's neural networks, resulting in the robot killing Walter with a swipe of its hand and Ren's death by electrocution. Mechagodzilla, now possessed by Ghidorah's consciousness, breaks free from the Apex facility underneath Victoria Peak Mountain and rampages through the city before Godzilla confronts it. Quickly coming into contact with Godzilla, Mechagodzilla fires a barrage of missiles at its organic counterpart before the two engage in battle.
Godzilla, despite having already become tired from his previous fight against Kong, and Mechagodzilla battle, at one point both firing their energy beams at one other which lock together, only for Mechagodzilla to get the upper hand and push Godzilla down and burn him. Nathan, Ilene, and Jia approach an unconscious Kong, where Jia notices that his heartbeat is slowing down. While Mechagodzilla proceeds to overrun and severely beat Godzilla, the others approach an unconscious Kong. In response, Ilene explains that they are unable to generate a charge large enough to restart Kong's heart. However, remembering what Maia said earlier about the HEAVs producing a charge large enough to power Las Vegas for a week, Nathan flies the remaining HEAV onto Kong's chest and sets it to self-destruct, detonating the craft and unleashing a massive electrical charge that instantly revives Kong.
Heaps onto the robot and redirects the red energy beam, sparing Godzilla's life. On the basis of the fact that Kong saved his life and the fact that Godzilla does not consider him an adversary, Godzilla aids Kong in his battle against Mechagodzilla.
As much as the Titans try to unite and change the tide, the robot proves to be too powerful for them. It is revealed that Kong had previously lost his axe when fighting Godzilla, and he reclaims it from the ruins and tries to use it against Mechagodzilla, but his weapon is rendered ineffectual by the robot's tail drill. With nothing left to do, Bernie takes out a flask of vodka and suggests that they all go out for a drink. The flask Bernie had been holding was snatched by Josh, who had an idea and poured the contents of the flask on the control panel, causing Mechagodzilla to halt and enabling Godzilla and Kong the time to recover.
The atomic breath of Godzilla powers up Kong's axe as soon as he sees him wield it, enabling Kong to dismember Mechagodzilla and remove its head before raising his trophy in victory and taking a seat to relax.
Madison re-introduces Mark to Josh and Bernie, who are delighted to see Mark and invite him into his program to discuss the Monarch facility in Roswell. Godzilla appears out of nowhere, prompting Kong to pick up his axe and continue the fight. Godzilla does not attack, instead staring Kong down. Kong lowers his axe, thereby ending the war between his and Godzilla's species. Godzilla and Kong are now on equal footing, and Godzilla returns to the water calmly, with Kong and everyone else observing.
Monarch has built an observation station in the Hollow Earth at some point in the future. Ilene, Nathan, and Jia observe Kong as he walks down the street one morning. Kong jumps atop a cliff, pounds his chest, and roars, proclaiming himself king of the Hollow Earth and enthusiastically accepting it as his new home and kingdom after signing "home" to Jia.
On April 17, 2021, it was reported that despite still somewhat depressed box office due to the pandemic, Godzilla vs. Kong had surpassed the total box office of the film Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
Chandler has appeared in every King Kong film, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and every crossover movie between the two.
The scene where Kong smashes his right shoulder (having been dislocated earlier) against a building to relocate it could be a reference to Martin Riggs’s infamous ability of a similar nature in the Lethal Weapon franchise.
The base of Mechagodzilla is identical to that of the Central Dogma, in that it is underground and capped by a pyramid.
